This class is in-person at Artichoke Music (in SE Portland). Limited to 13 Students. Classroom is located upstairs(front classroom)

This class meets on Sundays for 7 weeks. The dates for this class are September 14, 21, 28, October 5, 12, 19 and 26.  The time is 10am-11am.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Get ready to jam! This is class is all levels of players wanting to learn and play gypsy jazz songs and soloing ideas in the gypsy jazz style of Django Reinhardt. No better way to learn than to learn the music of Django Reinhardt! This special term is ALL Django!

Taught by Tracy Kim, who has been teaching and playing this style for over 25 years!

Guitar will be the focus and used to for demonstrations. However, All Instruments are welcome to join in! PDFs with TABS will be emailed to students and will be used for Guitar. Standard notation is included for all other instruments.

Students will learn improvisation strategies using Tracy’s etudes as demonstrations of licks and soloing concepts. Select licks, solos and techniques from other players will also be highlighted.

This class will be get you confident for jamming at local Django and Gypsy Jazz jams immediately! Students will be jamming at the beginning and end of each class. Yes, Tracy will discuss “how to jam”, etiquette, etc. It will be fun and “jam” packed with licks and soloing concepts.

TRACY will choose songs from the following Django Reinhardt Gypsy Jazz Set List for the Fall Term:

1. Appel Direct

2. Swing 42

3. Minor Blues

4. Blues Clair

5. Douce Ambiance

6. Troublant Bolero

7. Django’s Tiger

8. Heavy Artillery

These songs have been hand selected by Tracy especially for the intermediate players to demonstrate the various key concepts for improvisation in the Manouche style developed by Django Reinhardt and contemporary players.

Please Note: You can do a $50 drop-in rate per session.

Tracy Kim has taught music professionally for the last 25+ years in the Portland area. He can be seen performing in the area many nights a week often with different ensembles from folk to rock to country to jazz. Many of his students have gone on to be professional musicians and instructors.

Private lessons in person or via Skype, FaceTime, or Zoom with Tracy are generally on guitar, ukulele, piano, or music coaching, in general.
