This class is for the student who wishes to learn to improvise and to understand the sounds of Django Reinhardt and the Gypsy Jazz Style! It is a combo of my many classes all in one. The licks and exercises which we will use as a warmup. Then, of course, application over a tune(often choose popular songs for GJ list) and then the jamming! All in one session! Below is a description for the classes:

Gypsy Jazz Boot Camp:

Here is the class you have been waiting for! This is an improvisation class with the goal to expand your technique, fretboard knowledge and visualization skills and also develop a strong foundation for targeting and embellishing chord tones. Drills, scales, arpeggios, licks, and tricks are all presented in the class. Tabs will be used for guitarists and mandolinists. Standard notation for all other instruments.

Gypsy Jazz Boot Camp is designed to allow you to improvise over any chord or chord progression at any time. Tracy Kim has been playin and teaching Gypsy Jazz for about 20 years. He has developed a method using particular exercises and licks that will teach the student how to simplify their thinking and focus on playing lyrical, melodic, and swinging improvisations in the style of Django Reinhardt.

These concepts will be applied immediately to many tunes, including:
Minor Swing, Dark Eyes, Avalon, Sweet Georgia Brown, Djangology, Bossa Dorado, Exactly Like You, After You've Gone, Chinatown, I'll See You in My Dreams, It Don't Mean a Thing, Caravan, and many more. A special lesson will be on Django licks and his unique devices(Whole Tone Scale, Diminshed Arpegggios, Chromaticism, Open String licks).

Tracy will be using etudes created by himself, as well as solos from Django, Bireli, Stochelo, Romane, Jimmy Rosenberg, Tchavalo, Christiaan van Hemert, Angelo Debarre, Gonzalo, and Andreas Oberg. Lots of great material to practice!

Gypsy Jazz Repertoire/Jam:

Whether you have already attended some of Portland's various Gypsy Jazz Jams or would like to in the future, this class will prepare/aid you in many ways.

Tracy Kim has hosted the Gypsy Jazz Jam Workshop for over 7 years. Also, he hosts a bi-weekly Gypsy Jazz Jam at Raven and Rose for his students(former and prior).

In this class, Tracy gives insight on the following topics:

-Jam session etiquette
-Core repertoire for Gypsy Jazz
-Following and understanding song forms(how not to get lost!)
-Trading licks, twos, fours, eights.
-Building lick repertoire and some easy soloing tricks and concepts written in Tracy's various etudes(will be passed out in class)
-Learn common song forms and progressions and how they can applied to countless other tunes!
